The International Federation of Business and Professional Women is a non-governmental organization (NGO) founded in Geneva, Switzerland on the initiative of Dr. Lena Madesin Phillips in 1930. It has the Consultative Status with the United Nations through the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) since 1947 and it is spread over 94 countries with over 30,000 members. This year BPW International completed 80 years of successful work developing the professional, leadership and business potential of women on all levels through advocacy, mentoring, networking, skill building and economic empowerment programs and projects around the world.

The Lena Award, organized by BPW Switzerland on April 30, 2010, is an award dedicated to the memory of the founder of BPW, Dr. Lena Madesin Phillips. It is presented for the second time in four categories and the purpose is to honour extraordinary achievements by or for women and families.
