REPRIEVE (www.reprieve.org.uk) is a frontline legal action charity, fighting for prisoners on death row or held without trial in the name of the "war on terror". Working on the frontline, the organisation secures each person’s right to a fair trial and provides legal support to prisoners unable to pay for it themselves.
At the press conference REPRIEVE Director Clive Stafford Smith will discuss the work of Reprieve in providing frontline investigation and legal representation to prisoners denied justice by powerful governments across the world, from death row to Guantánamo Bay.
REPRIEVE currently represents 31 prisoners in Guantánamo Bay and Clive, who has visited the prison 20 times, will be discussing some of the most pressing concerns of the moment. In particular, Clive will discuss the need for European governments to cooperate in finding ways to offer asylum to innocent prisoners at Guantánamo. As many as 50 prisoners have been cleared for release by military review boards, but cannot be returned to their home countries because of fears that they will be tortured. With legislation in place to prevent them being granted asylum in the United States, it is imperative that the countries of Europe step forward to rescue these men from further suffering in Guantánamo Bay.
Clive Stafford Smith will also be discussing REPRIEVE’s work fighting for prisoners on death row around the world and highlight some of REPRIEVE’s recent successes.
