"Peace and Security in a world of conflict without borders
Geneva Council meeting of the Socialist International
"

Luis Ayala
Secretary General of the Socialist International,

Wednesday 27 June at 14.30 hrs

« La Pastorale » Route de Ferney 106, Genève

This press conference is held on the occasion of the meeting of the Socialist International Council, to be held in Geneva on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 June, to focus on some of the acute conflicts or situations of instability high on regional and global agendas that call on the international community and the global social democratic movement for responses and initiatives to contribute to their solution.

Under the central theme “Working for global peace and security in a world of conflicts without borders”, the Council will bring together leaders and representatives of member parties to examine and address the Israeli-Palestinian situation, the future for Lebanon and the way forward in Iraq. Discussions will also focus on efforts to ensure stability in the Western Balkans, making peace work in Côte d'Ivoire, the search for solutions in the Caucasus, ending violence in Colombia and consolidating peace in Nepal. Over 350 delegates from about 120 parties from all regions of the world, including some heads of state and government, will attend.

The pressing issues of climate change, energy and governance will also figure high in the discussions with the launching of a Commission for a Sustainable World Society to develop a common approach and proposals by the social democratic movement to face these urgent matters.

The Socialist International is the worldwide political organisation of social democratic, socialist and labour parties. The activities of the International focus on advancing democracy, supporting the peaceful resolution of conflicts, securing fair global governance, guaranteeing respect for human rights, achieving social justice and gender equality and promoting sustainable development. The building of consensus views and the development of common platforms for action are central to the work of the International, through an extensive programme of activities.
