China still refuses to publicly declare the whereabouts of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the Eleventh Panchen Lama of Tibet, after his detention in May 1995 when he was six years old. Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was recognized by H.H. the Dalai Lama in 1995, shortly thereafter he and his family were taken from their home by Chinese authorities. The boy and his parents have now spent the last 10 years incommunicado detention.

Tibetan rights organizations report hundreds of thousands of signatures petitioning the UN and national governments over the last 10 years. Both Chinese and Tibetan rights groups have appealed directly to the UN to make progress on the matter of the missing Panchen Lama.

In connection with the current CRC session, Tibetans and their supporters will organise a Vigil outside Palais Wilson on Monday afternoon, not only to raise the case of the missing Panchen Lama of Tibet but also to ensure that CRC publicly calls upon the Chinese authorities to invite its delegation to meet with this important religious leader of the Tibetan people.

For further information :

The press meeting will be followed by a drink.
I look forward to seeing you at this press meeting

Guy Mettan, Executive Director
