The yearly Global Overview of recent trends and developments regarding the worldwide internal displacement crisis will be launched this year in Geneva by Jan Egeland, the UN’s Emergency Relief Coordinator. With this report, the Global IDP Project seeks to draw attention to the plight of the world’s 25 million internally displaced people (IDPs). Unlike refugees who managed to cross an international border, IDPs cannot count on a well-established international system of protection and assistance. Uprooted from their homes by civil wars and human rights abuses, many IDPs struggle to survive in hostile environments, neglected by their governments and the international community.
The Geneva-based Global IDP Project, an independent non-governmental body established by the Norwegian Refugee Council, monitors internal displacement worldwide at the request of the United Nations.
