"New
technical standards that make use of unlicenced radio spectrum
as WiFi (IEEE 802.11b) has also brought new opportunities
for community networking and wireless Internet Providers.
The fact that Internet connectivity can be provided via
licence-free wireless networks has also introduce new possibilities
with clear implications for the traditional telecommunication
operators.
During
the presentation Dr Alberto Escudero-Pascual, researcher
at the Royal
Institute of Technology in Sweden will present three
different related projects that make use of the technology
in a different manner:
Nora
Wireless (a wireless community network), Stockholmopen and the
IT University wireless infrastructure (open
neutral access network) and the
role of low cost broadband wireless access in developing
countries.
The
presentation will cover the technical (security and
privacy), legal (regulations) and social aspects (business
models, community networking) around this technology
in all different scenarios.
Alberto
Escudero Pascual has been doctoral student at the
Royal Institute of Technology since January 2000. He
has been consultant in security and privacy world wide
since 1996. He received his Diploma Degree (M.Sc.) in
Telecommunication Engineering from the Polytechnical
University of Madrid in the area of renewable energies
in 1998. Between 1998-1999 he has been doing research
at the Bioengineering and Telemedicine Group (UPM) in
low cost internet access in developing countries and
at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas
(CSIC). In June 2001 he obtained a Tek Lic. Degree in
the subject of location privacy in mobile internet. During
the last ten years his research interests include wireless
internet access in developing countries, community networks,
privacy and security in mobile internet, privacy-enhancing
technologies and privacy threats in the next generation
Internet. He is currently participating in different
European Union Forums in the area of Cybercrime and Data
Protection. In December 2002 he got his Ph.D. Proposal
titled: "Privacy in the next generation Internet:
Data Protection in the context of European Union Policy".
I
started to work with radio in early 1991, thanks to a
HAM radio club (CMU Chaminade). After a couple of years
I started working with packet radio AX.25 EA4GLO During
1998-99 I worked in the G.B.T in the EHAS project. The
EHAS project is providing Internet connectivity using
TCP/IP over AX.25 for health care personel in isolated
areas of developing countries. After building the IT
University wireless network at KTH in the summer 2000
based on IEEE 802.11b and MobileIP, my efforts have moved
towards wireless open/free networks and the Stockholm
Open initiative."
