World Sight Day 2002 aims to raise awareness of the problem of avoidable blindness and the need to restore sight to over 20 million needlessly blind people as a basic human right. World Sight Day will be observed on 10 October and is coordinated by the Global initiative 'VISION 2020: The Right to Sight', a joint initiative of the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and World Health Organization (WHO). It seeks to eliminate avoidable blindness by the year 2020. The focus for this year's World Sight Day is the launch of the first annual 'VISION 2020 Report on World Sight - Seeing is Believing'. The aim of this inaugural report is to bring the tragedy of unnecessary blindness to a wider audience than health professionals and illustrate that blindness is much more than just a health issue.
